Text description provided by the architects. The creative studio toi toi toi (T3) researches, designs and offers wellness spaces. This spirit was applied to the 8,215 m² interior of Berlin-based software company Contentful. The imminent return of employees after the corona pandemic required rethinking the working environment. T3’s vision was to design agile, human-centered spaces to a new standard. Early on, a design committee was created with representatives from each Contentful department, allowing employees to fully participate in the transformation. The result is a space with human interaction at its core. ‘Contentfulers’ start the day with end-of-trip facilities such as underground bike parking, showers, fitness room and custom-built smart lockers situated throughout the interior. For a little fun, individually programmed speakers in the custom-designed gender-neutral bathrooms make every trip to the bathroom a different musical experience.
The workplace houses a variety of adaptable spaces for social interaction and productivity. An open-concept coffee shop and event space offers diversity, plus flexible meeting rooms that vary in size, design, and layout. A large outdoor terrace with staff gardens continues the organic interiors, integrating plant life on all levels. To help you find your way, T3 co-designed and developed a fully customized guidance system. Navigating the five floors required innovations such as custom 3D icons highlighting tea kitchens, bathrooms, closets, meeting rooms and collaboration zones. The workplace supports neurodiversity and inclusion with multi-directional dimmable lighting, automated umbrellas, phone booths, height-adjustable ergonomic workstations, and interactive Zoom screens in every team room. Quiet to noisy zones and the application of acoustic treatments help balance functionality with open and closed workspaces.
Other wellness features include custom-designed color therapy nap pods, prayer/meditation rooms (including a dedicated ablution room), a library, and a music production station for creativity. A child-friendly zone with an adjacent private room for feeding and changing also offers retreat time for parents. Above all, the project emphasizes economic awareness, supporting local suppliers, artisans and startups committed to sustainable practices. The cafe’s flooring is a biopolymer made from recycled fishing nets from the North Sea. The acoustic spray on the workshop ceiling is made from recycled denim – certified from cradle to cradle. The selected fabrics are made from renewable raw materials or recycled post-consumer polyester and the acoustic wall panels are sourced from 100% recycled plastic bottles. Furniture and lighting from the former Contentful workplace were repurposed; woven seamlessly into the new environment. Embraced by its returning community, Contentful is ultimately a success story; designed to be flexible, easy to explore and adaptable to the way people want to work.
